BMI View: Driven by the uncertainty surrounding the importing of water from the Dongjiang in mainland China, the Hong Kong authorities are implementing a number of strategies and projects that reduce the demand for fresh water while simultaneously tapping alternative sources of water supply. This includes the refurbishment of water networks, the construction and expansion of water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants and pilot desalination projects. Together, these measures are expected to reduce water extraction and consumption between 2013 and 2017.
